Cîteaux Abbey

Visit the Cîteaux Abbey, a place of worship of regional importance, 5.5 km from the Clos Badan Hotel.

Built in 1098, the Cîteaux Abbey is a Cistercian work of art boasting Gothic and classical architecture of the 6th century. Located in Saint-Nicolas-les-Cîteaux, in the Côte-d'Or region of Burgundy, the Cîteaux Abbey gives tours of its famous library and its novitiate.

This building is the only one in which the layout with the library above the copyists' workshops is preserved. Techniques of traditional bookbinding, as practised from the 12th to the 19th century in the copyists' cloisters, are exhibited on the ground floor. This traditional view allows you to travel back in time and discover the crafts of the past. The library, exhibiting the old manuscripts of the Cîteaux Abbey, is located on the first floor.

Another must-see at Notre-Dame de Cîteaux Abbey is the permanent exhibition located between the charming vaulted roofs and cloisters. To learn more about the Cistercian way of life, the town planning, the barns, the cellars, the ponds and mills as well as the forests and vineyards, come along and explore the place!
